  1. We would be stabbing our ally Georgia in the back, and that ain't right.

  2. nothing because there still wont be the majority of the world recongizing them as independent states.

  3. Well, if the US recognised Abkhazia and insisted that the 250,000 Georgian refugees were allowed to return to the province, then they could have a new vote, and the majority Georgian population would choose to reunite with Georgia.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia are a problem, because the Russians have exiled most of their populations! The pro-Russian minority that were left voted for independence.

Or, to really annoy the Russians, the US could recognise the independence of all the restive ethnic regions : Abkhazia, South Ossetia . . . AND also Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia and Dagestan, which lie within the borders of Russia.

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. If the Russians think South Ossetia should be independent, then why not North Ossetia and Chechnya?

BTW Both Abkhazia and South Ossetia are too small to function as independent states. Population-wise they are like Andorra and Liechtenstein in Europe, who survive only by selling stamps and ski-holidays!

  4. The tooth fair will see her shadow and we will have six more weeks of political campaigning.
