My cat has had a yearly leukemia shot, and this year i went six weeks past the time that his yearly shots were due. Now in that time, he never once went outside for he is an indoor cat. He does go into the garage, to hunt for mice for like 30 minutes maybe at night, SOMETIMES. Since he doesn't go outside i figured it would be all right and he got the shot. Now i am hearing things about if he had leukemia and got the shot, he wont survive. The only way he would of contacted it is either 1) the past owners cat that lived here over a year ago used to be in the garage.... but that cat left this house back then. 2) my dog is always out going to lakes and camping with us. SO getting to my questions, 1) what would happen to kitty if that was the case? and 2) can dogs transfer leukemia? I didn't think they could get the disease. Thank you in advance I am a seriously worried mom.

  1. Your dog can not contract feline leukemia and transfer it to your cat. It is usually a cat to cat transfer, and the fact that there was another cat in the garage a year ago doesn't mean your cat could get it that way. Feline Leukemia tests aren't that expensive. You should schedule an appointment to have that done. From the ways you described, I don't think your cat has it, but your mind will be at ease if you get the test done.

    Good luck!

  2. don't worry your cat will be fine you have done nothing wrong in fact you have helped your cat by preventing it getting an awful disease

  3. Dogs cannot transfer Leukemia to cats because the Leukemia that runs through cats is Feline Leukemia and dogs are not felines they are canines. We had ur cats tested for Feline Leukemia before we ever brought them home. I don't know anything about shots for Leukemia.

  4. Dogs can't transmit it.  It is spread from cat to cat through urine or saliva, and does not live long outside the pet.  Those that share food bowls and litter boxes are at higher risk.  Giving a vaccine to a positive cat won't hurt at all....it just won't help prevent anything.

  5. The best person to answer your questions is your vet.  You can call your vet's office and tell them of your concerns and I'm sure they will be happy to help you.

    Good luck!

  6. It is a siliva transfer disease... the cat that USE to be there..that disease is long gone.. and I don't think a dog can get it or pass it

    don't worry so much!

  7. Hi I am answering this because I have 4 cats with leukemia. No dogs canNot transfer the dieasie.Your cat can NOT get it just because another cat lived there before and had it.the only way your cat can get it is fighting with one that has it,using the same litter box as one that has ,eating and drinking out of the same dish with one that has it and mating with one that has it.so don'tt worry your cat is SAFE.:) :) :) have an awesomee day!  :)
