As we ALL know, you are supposed to when doing a wood project. Sand the object 3 times with sandpaper of different grids (80,220,400).

What happens when you only do the first one.

  1. If you stain, the scratch marks will allow the pigment to lodge in them and it will look like you didn't do a good job sanding.

BTW, skipping from 80 to 220 is too big of a jump.  80 to 120 is about right.  Once you get past about 150 or 180, you are also wasting your time.  400 is too fine to sand raw wood.

  2. You will have a rough surface and need much more paint or varnish since it will also be very pourous. Less sanding is fine for outdoor plant benches and potting stands but if you intend to sit or lean against it the extra sanding will also reduce the splinters and scraps an unfinshed piece can cause. Good Luck!

  3. When you go to paint over it you will have texture from the wood, and the project won't look finished. Do it right the first time around, it's cheaper! Good luck with your project!

  4. Like the other guys said, 80 is to rough to start unless you're working with some really rough lumber, 80 to 220 is to much of a jump - get some 150 grit in there and 400 is to fine for face grain.  use it for endgrain otherwise it'll soak up more of the stain and be darker than the rest of the project.  finish out your facegrain with the 220.

  5. The 80 is too strong and make a very rough surface.
