What happens if i file a police report?

I have been receiving harassing phone calls from the same person for months, now he is contacting my friends and family. enough is enough already i am planning on going in and filing a police report on friday (that is the earliest i can get the phone records). but i dont know what happens after i file the report? do i have to go to court and explain myself or what? please help, serious answers only this is a serious question!

  1. It depends on were you live. In New York for example you go to you local police department to file a report. From there the officer will fill out the report, do the information for aggravated harassment and apply for a warrant. As soon as the suspect is arrested he goes before the judge and is arraigned on the charges. An oder of protection is issued for the complainant. And not to mention the key is to document,so even if you do not want charges pressed at that particular time you can at least have the incident documented for future use. Not to mention he has moved on to harass your family, you never know what this guy will do.  


  2. Filing a report is simply that. You do not have to go to court when you file a report. You need to tell the Officer that takes the report that you want to press charges, and then they'll probably forward it to an investigator, and go from there. However, if you simply file a report, you're only legally documenting the incidents.
