What happens if i get caught shoplifting an item under $10?

I didn't have to sign anything, the police weren't contacted, and they copied down the info on my ID. They said I would be fined but do they actually follow through with that? Will it be on my record? What's next?

Only a court can fine you, not a store. Warning: do not assume stealing small stuff os OK, because you won't be as lucky next time.

Funny thing here-- my fiancee had to go to court and there were people there for theft from Wal-Mart (cheap stuff) and they were putting them in jail for 1-3 days!  lol... So you need to be smarter with your theft, or here's an idea-- DON'T STEAL CHEAP STUFF YOU CAN JUST BUY???
