  1. If your intake valve is open ( you can't figure this out unless you take the engine apart ) by chance, the fuel can drip down into your combustion chamber via your open intake valve and seem down past your piston.

As the fuel seeps down in there it is stripping your clyinder walls of the oil that is there. Now, when you start your bike up in the morning there isn't any lubrication. It's metal on metal and you're causing unecessary wear on your piston rings and cylinder walls. Start up is always one of the hardest things you can do for an engine, so why rob it off oil? Turn your fuel lever off. Warm the bike up slowly.

Fuel can drip out of the overflow also, which can damage your asphalt driveway if you have one.

  2. if its carburated, your carbs will possible overflow and either leak out onto the ground or into your engine.....

Get in the habit of shutting it off right away when you get off of it...

  3. I've never had an issue with leaving them on.

  4. I've accidentally done it before, more than once.  No problems at all.

  5. 30 odd years & never turned the fuel off but i ride every day

  6. absolutely nothing. Overnight won't hurt. I leave mine on all the time. Only time I turn it off is for winter storage. No problems at all.

  7. On an EFI bike nothing at all should happen. There should be no real fuel system flow with the injector pump not running. With a carbed bike in really good condition, nothing should happen either. My old Ironhead Sportster would drain the fuel tank onto the garage floor if you didn't shut it off though. No amount of messing with the carb needle or float seemed to solve it. Of the 20 or more bikes that I have owned, that was the only one that really seemed to care one way or the other. I mainly just use it to shut off the fuel when I drain my carb for the winter.

  8. Nothing, it'll be fine. Try and make a habbit of turning it off though. One night shouldn't cause any problems but if it is left for too long, the fuel can gel up in the carb and you'll have to strip it down and clean it out.

  9. The fuel valve on my motorcycle doesn't have an "OFF" position.  I don't worry about it.
