  1. yeah the main thing is national merit scholar stuff. The cutoff for the first level was about 200 this year, and the second round (semi-finalist) is the top 1% of students, and was a 217 last year in Texas. 15000 of the 16000 semi-finalists become finalist based on other factors in the students life, i.e. SAT scores, extracurriculars et cetera. Then out of those, 8000 or so get a $2500 per year scholarship that isn't all that important for financial aid, but is a great bonus on a college resume. Many public schools recruit national merit finalists with full-rides. And it looks good for admissions to more elite schools. But anyway, good luck!

  2. Well, You can become a national merit scholar which is a reputable position to be in. You have to score about a 210-220 to become one and there is a selection process beyond the score so I hope you are rounded. It's equivalent to 2100-2200 on the SAT. All the best to you, I was only able to get 193.

  3. The main benefit is that when you get to high school, you can try for the National Merit Scholar program, as the first person said. [Though, I think you have to retake the PSAT your Junior year of high school for it to count - talk to your counselor to find out more.] Plus, it is good practice for SATs. Otherwise.. not much benefits except bragging rights for good scores.

  4. Nothing happens at all. The PSAT is basically a tool to show you how well you might score on the SAT. PSAT scores are for your reference only but don't actually count for anything. No college will ever ask for a PSAT score. The SAT is what counts.

P.S.... I can't believe you're studying for the SATs so early! You shouldn't stress over the SATs and especially not the PSATs. Unless you're aiming for Harvard, the SAT "making or breaking you" is largley a myth. Relax and enjoy being a kid.

  5. You will become a National Merit Finalist and get a free ride to one of over 100 colleges! It will take a score ranging between 208 (Mississippi) and 228 (Massachusetts). Good luck, even if you choose not to take the full ride I don't think anything looks better on your college application than "National Merit Scholar." Good luck!
