Same thing today - the sentence is death; the method is merely an option by the State.

Yes, if they die then come back to life, then the sentence of death has been carried out, but the death certificate has to be completed and then they come back, otherwise people will think they just faked their deaths. If they just won't die then, they keep trying til they succeed in carrying out the sentence.
