What happens if the rotation of the earth speeds up?

What happens to us if the rotation of the earth speeds up? How much change in mph would have to happen before we would notice? Would you chose to be a sith or a jedi? What would happen if it slowed (not stopped) down? Does the rotation of the earth stay consistent, or change often?

Well first of all, the hours per day shortens.  Earth's magnetic field strength increases.  And the centrifugal forces can cancel out some of Earth's gravity, and increase the equator's radius.

And a side note, if you increased the Earth's speed up to 10000 km/h, or shorten its day to only 4 hours, then the centrifugal forces would cancel out Earth's gravity and throw everything off the planet.

The Earth rotates at a maximum speed of 1673.5km/hr on its equator.  About 1000 miles per hour.  

To notice the day shortening to only 23 hours per day instead of 24, then the Earth's rotation speed needs to be increased by only 68km/h.  Down to 22 hours, 147.1km.  Down to 20 hours, 233.9km/h, and you notice the speed increases by a fair amount every hour.

If it were to slow down, gravity will increase by a small amount due to less centrifugal force, and the radius of the equator will shrink a little.  Days will become longer, and Earth's magnetic field strength will drop.

No, the Earth's rotation doesn't stay constant.  In fact, millions of years ago, the Earth was spinning faster than today.

The earth's rotation won't change noticeably for billions of years, and mostly because of tidal forces from the moon.  And I think I'd be a jedi, because I want a blue light sabre, not a red one.

If the earth's rotation speeds up, there will be noticeable climate change. Because the earth's rotation is actually one of the factors of our climate. And it would mean we will get older faster, but might look younger.... (",)

It's very impossible for that to happen. But if it did speed up. The days & night will be shorter depends on how much the Earth sped up. Let's say it sped up twice than now. A day will be 12 hours & there will be 6 hours night & 6 hours day. Yes, we will notice.

The speed of rotation of the Earth is tied to the Moon. Because of tidal forces and gravitational locking, the rotation of the Earth is slowing down. In a few billion years, Earth will show the same side to the Moon at all times just as the Moon shows the same side to Earth. This is a common natural phenomenon for orbs which are gravitationally close to each other.

Earth is currently slowing an average of .002 seconds per day. This is not a significant number to cause immediate change. However, over lengths of time it will cause Earth to be more spheroid in shape and less oblate.

Although this geophysical change will be slow, it will alter movements of continental plates. This affects Earth's mantle, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. In more general terms, the geophysical activity in the future will be slow when compared to millions of years ago when the Earth was changing more violently. The winds will also decrease in strength as the rotation slows.

The longer days and longer nights would combine with Milankovitch cycles to potentially bring about longer ice ages. But this would be counteracted by the fact that the Sun is increasing its size and heat output and will make life forms of any kind impossible in one billion years. The exact mathematical formula calculations are left to a future race of Earthlings.

Yes, the days would of course be shorter, (not 6 hour day and 6 hour night as mentioned above, it would still depend on the time of year)

The tides on the equator would get higher and at the poles would get lower. Erosion and rise in water level would change the shape of the coast lines. Rivers near the poles would run faster. The ocean currents would increase and the waves there would be higher when the wind goes against the waves. Daily temperature variations would decrease.

One mile an hour would be noticeable. Geosynchronous satellites would go out of sync. Celestial navigation would have errors. GPS would have errors. Geocachers (www.geocaching.com)  would no longer find caches. The length of the month would change.

first our typical day would be faster. then the world climate would change because places would get more or less light/heat. this would mean plants might die or flourish; could be good or bad. and manhy other stuff.

over the years the environment would evolve but it would be very hard for us because that evolution is over thousands/millions of years.

but i think we will get over it.

another thing is we would have to change our whole time system so that it will run fast to fit the faster speed. OR maybe we would have like 10 hours instead of 12.
