  1. The current Speaker of the House becomes vice president automatically in this scenario. There is a line of succession for the presidency in place. Don't you watch 24?

  2. EDIT: I incorrectly stated the Secretary of State would succeed the VP, but in fact the next "vice president" would be the Speaker of the House.

Here is the order of succession:

    1 Vice President

2 Speaker of the House of Representatives

3 President pro tempore of the Senate

    4 Secretary of State

    5 Secretary of the Treasury

    6 Secretary of Defense

    7 Attorney General

    8 Secretary of the Interior

    9 Secretary of Agriculture

    10 Secretary of Commerce

    11 Secretary of Labor

12 Secretary of Health and Human Services

13 Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

    14 Secretary of Transportation

    15 Secretary of Energy

    16 Secretary of Education

    17 Secretary of Veterans Affairs

  3. no one picks the next vice president just randomly, the next vp would be the next chair for example nancy pelosi

  4. For most of the history of the USA, if the vice presidency was vacant either through resignation, death, or succeeding to the presidency the office was left vacant. In that case, if the president died, the "speaker of the house" would be president. "The secretary of state" is the next one in the line of succession. For example, John C. Calhoun resigned on December 28, 1832 to take a seat in the Senate, and the office was simply left vacant for the next 3 months. A total of 7 vice presidents have died in office, (the last one in 1912) and their office was simply left vacant.

=  Forty years ago  they amended the consitution (25th) so that the new procedure is for the president to nominate a candidate for vice president, but the candidate must be approved by both houses of congress. In 1973 when VP Spiro Agnew resigned because of charges of financial impropriety, President Nixon nominated Gerald Ford for the office. This was a safe choice since Gerald Ford was next in the line of succession anyway. Both houses approved the nomination, partly because Gerald Ford said he would not run in the next election. Of course, Gerald Ford broke the promise and ran anyway (and lost).

= If d**k Cheney resigned or died, GW Bush would probably appoint someone for publicity value and the history books since he has only 20 weeks left in his presidency. Some people have suggested that Cheney should have resigned  this year so that GW Bush could nominate Condaleeza Rice.

= If Obama is elected, and Joe Biden should resign I think the choice would be obvious- Nancy Pelosi (same reason, she is next in line for the presidency anyway). THIS IS NOT REQUIRED BY LAW AS SOME PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED. IT IS SIMPLY THE MOST OBVIOUS CHOICE.

= If McCain is elected, and Sarah Palin would resign, it would be a difficult decision. He would obviously want to nominate a powerful Republican that would run for president after him. However, both houses of congress are controlled by the Democrats so they would be reluctant to approve any choice. Also the Democrats would know that Nancy Pelosi would be next in line for the presidency. I don't know what would happen. I suspect that the only person that they could compromise on would be an Independent Senator like Joseph LIEBERMAN, .

  5. Pelosi says, "Oh that would be me"

  6. The President

  7. The President with a lot of input from his party but it has to be confirmed by Congress so all the Congressmen also get to put in their opinions.

  8. mmm the president? I think? Idk i am bad at math.xD

  9. I actually thought someone would come up with the right answer.  U S Constitution article two.

  10. Doh... the person who picked the first vice president.

  11. You mean is Palin resigns? I guess Mc Cain would have to find someone else

  12. the ppl vote duh...

  13. The Speaker of House becomes the new Vice President.

It is the established order of succession of our government.

If Cheney's heart finally exploded Nancy Pelosi would become Vice President whether or not the Republicans liked it.

  14. read the constitution as amended .

  15. your mama

  16. It happened when Nixon was President. Vice President Agnew resigned to avoid prosecution for bribery, and Nixon nominated Ford to  replace him and both the House and the Senate confirmed the nomination. When Nixon later resigned because of the Watergate Scandal, Ford became president and chose a new vice president.

Edit The constitution was amended (25th) in 1967 to allow for this proceedure.

  17. The President with confirmation by both houses of the Congress.  This is set out in Amendment 25 to the U. S. Constitution which states:  "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."

  18. If the Vice President resigned the President picks a new one.  If both the president & v.p. resigned the Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) would become president.  Gaaaaaagggg!

  19. the speaker of the house is 3rd in line to the presidency.

so by default they would become vice president.

It is not the Secretary of State as someone stated above.

  20. The president or the congress or something. I'm not completely sure.

  21. The President picks the new Vice President with consent of the Senate.

That's how it went when Spiro Agnew resigned from the Vice Presidency under Richard Nixon.

  22. The third in line would become our VP... Nancy Pelosi
