What happens if there is a delay in you getting your latest P45 to give to your new employer?

  1. Ask you new employer for a for P46, this will avoid you paying basic rate tax (20%)


  2. Fill  in  P46 instead, this will establish your new tax code and end basic emergency rate tax

  3. You just fill in a P46 which your new employer will provide to you.

    It's not a big deal - this is very common.  It can take companies up to a month to provide a P45 so if you're moving straight from one job to another it's quite likely that you won'y get it in time.

    Just explain the situation to your new employer when they ask for your P45.  But actually, I've never had an employer ask me for one - they just automatically hand out a P46.
