What happens if two first place mlb teams have the same record to end the season? who makes the playoffs?

like if they were both 90-72. what team would make the playoffs? would it go according to who split the season series or would they have a tiebreaker game?

It would go to a one game tiebreaker.  Look at the Rockies and Padres game last year.  Now that's what I call a good game

Okay say it's the Redsox and the Yankees which ever team beat the other team the most like if the sox are 5-3 and the rays are 3-5 against him the sox would get the pennant.

That if nomatter what happens one will make the playoffs one will make wild card that what happened in 2005 with the Yanks and Sox. Try going to wikipedia and Redsox then in 2005 and they might have say it in thier cause wiki has everything.

If teams are tied for first place in their division they will have a one game playoff to decide the winner.  The home team is decided by a flip of the coin by the commissioner.

What happens when two teams have the same record and are vying for the playoffs depends on the playoff picture.

If both teams are going to make the playoffs (one will be the division winner and the other the wild card team), then the team that won the season series will be the divison winner and the other team will be the wild card.  This happened a couple of years ago in the AL East with the Red Sox and the Yanks.

If only one team can make the playoffs, then the two teams will have to play one game to determine who gets into the playoffs.  Its not really a playoff game because the game counts toward the two teams' regular season records and stats.  This happened last year with the Rockies and the Padres.
