It can cause infection and scarring. You have to take them out if they aren't the type that dissolve on their own.

If they are self dissolving they will just fall out. But if not then you stand a chance of getting infection for leaving them in too long.

You must get them out if they are not disposable.   They can turn yucky,  get infected,  and start to smell and taste pretty nasty.
