What happens if u skip jury duty?

i like in oregon and i got a notice that i need to appear for jury duty on the 22. what will happen if i just dont go? i missed the deadline to get out of it and i have a class that day...

No one keeps national figures on jury duty no-shows, but the American Judicature Society considers the problem an epidemic in some communities, especially large urban areas such as Miami, Houston and Atlanta, where no-show rates routinely top 50. Now, communities are emphasizing the consequences of skipping jury duty. Among them:

•In Danville, Ill., a 19-year-old woman was found in contempt of court and sentenced to 14 days in jail for failing to appear for jury duty.

•In Topeka, no-shows have been fined up to $100 a day.

•In Grand Rapids, Mich., warrants were issued recently for the arrests of 56 people who failed to go to court and explain why they couldn't serve.

Failure to show up for jury duty increases court costs, Hicks says, because court officials have to send out additional summonses. High no-show rates also put at risk one of the most basic tenets of our democracy, he says.

"One of the reasons for our severing ties from England was being deprived of the right to trial by jury," Hicks says. "It is a sacred right."
