What happens if you're pulled over with too many passengers?

I live in NJ, and you're only supposed to drive with one passenger. Everyone breaks the rule, like it or not, but I heard that you can get arrested on the spot if you're driving. Is this true, or will you just get a ticket and go?

  1. Is this a law just for new drivers? I have family in NJ and visit often - i have never heard of this law.

  2. I could only see the following violation: N.J.S.A. 39:4-14.3d, More than one person on a motorized bicycle, 2 points.  I did not see anything about the number of passengers for young drivers in the New Jersey Driver's Manual.
