What happens if you child has unexcused absences?

Question

the school handbook says if a child gets more than 10 unexcused abcenses that something happens?

what happens? we are going on vacation the last week or two of school. He is missing 8 days. the principal excused 3 of them.........but 5 days will be unexcused. I dont know if he has any others, but if he does, what happens?

Go to school and ask how many days he has missed so far.

Then when you find that out call the school board and ask them what will happen.

If he has more than 10 unexcused absences, he will be retained ("left back") in his current grade next year.    I don't know how old your son is, but it's really not great to allow a child to miss 8 days of school because of a family vacation.   If I were in your shoes, I'd postpone your trip so he only misses a few days, not that many.

he probably has unexcused absences because he forgot to give the teacher a note or you forgot to give him one   hes too young to skip class  when hes only got one to go to   hes only 7  in first grade   mikey gets those too sometimes    they forget to write it down  you have to call them and tell them he was out cause he was sick those days

Talk to the school and ask. It varies by school district.

It mostly is a funding issue for the schools: they're only funded for students who show up. They shouldn't penalize you or call in Child Services because you go on a family vacation. That just doesn't make sense.

Again, talk to the school about "what happens" and let them know of your plans. It should be fine.

I thought when we went to school, you automatically failed if you had too many unexcused absences. Ask the principal what happens.

Your child will more than likely go to summer school.  My son missed 11 days, all excused, and he has to go to summer school even though he has all A's and B's and he's in fourth grade.  You could also get in legal trouble.  My son had health problems, he had to get biospys ect, and still has to go to summer school.  I don't think any vacation should over ride your son's schooling.  I wouldn't let my child miss two weeks of school for a vacation.  I don't care if it's the last few weeks of school either.  You can get in big trouble, hope it's worth it.

I don't know if you State or School District is the same as mine, but I can tell you my experience from last year.

Our school handbook says 10 absences of any kind get a letter home to the parents, and the letter goes in the child's file.  If there are 14 absences then the local child protective agency is pulled into investigate.

Last year my child got the 10 day letter, she was sick 6 times and missed 4 days  for vacation that were not excused.  The letter went into her file and that was that.  It did not affect her advancing to the next year.  Although getting the letter freaked me out because I had no idea about the 10 day rule!

I would talk to the principal and find out exactly how many absences your son has, and how many more days he can miss without it becoming a problem!

I think it would be in the child's and your best interest to put off leaving on Vacation till after school is out.

You can't go to jail, you might end up in court though.

wait until  school is out for vacation your setting a very bad example to him

its called truancy

you go to court and since hes a kid he goes into foster care and you the parent who is supposed to be responsible goes to jail

schedule family vacations during school breaks your the adult please act like it. you can wait until school is out for the summer for your vacation

you should also know when your kid is out of school and whether or not it was excused or not

take responsibility   get involved in your childs education he needs to be in school every day unless hes sick or a close family member dies vacation isnt an excuse the last couple of weeks of school are filled with tests and exams  keep him in school he could also have to repeat his grade
