  2. what's the saying, vessels seep, veins flow, and arteries spray? somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but cutting a blood vessel is the least harmful of the cuts you could sustain...

As soon as the blood and air meet, the clotting cascade begins.  Chemicals are released from the damaged tissue which cause inflammation (swelling redness, pain, heat and loss of function).  then platelets begin to gather and plug the defect, then clotting factors cause fibrin and tissue to grow at the site. It first forms a scab then eventually and gradually heals.
