  1. Depends how old it is and if it has been properly stored.  Milk that you buy at the store is pasteurized, which means it's heated to a specific temperature for a certain amount of time, intended to kill off most of the bacteria that are present.  If you keep it in the fridge, the bacteria's growth and reproduction are slowed down long enough to keep the milk good--at least until the expiration date.  After that point, they can't guarantee how much longer it's going to be safe to drink.  The most likely illness would be a case of food poisoning, which means you'd probably spend a couple of days with seriously nasty diarrhea.  Although people can die from food poisoning, most have the sense to toss creepy looking/smelling milk before it's THAT bad. It would take longer than a couple of days past the expiration date if it's been cold all along.

  2. Usually if it it is a week or less after the expiration date it is still okay to drink. But some people are more sensitive to items that are otu of date. So I suggest you trust your tastebuds, to whether or not it taste okay. Also if tiis past a week old I would reccommend that you throw it out.

  3. Milk can be out of code (or expired) without being spoiled. Sniff before drinking to detect spoilage. The date refers to the time after which the product can't be sold, meaning even if you buy it on the last day, it should still be good for a week or so.

  4. Well, you can tell your friend that if you drink milk that smells obviously bad (which is usually the first sign of truly expired milk that she will most likely have bloating and indigestion. If she is sure it is bad, and she really really wants to hold on to that milk in the fridge tell her to leave it out for a good day or two. After it curdles it goes through another stage, where it turns into a consumable product again because friendly bacteria naturally develop in it. That is what buttermilk is, it's like a liquid yogurt. After that she should probably through it out, unless she can get instructions on how to make cheese.
