What happens if you get caught shoplifting at 16?

I'm writing a book and the character gets caught stealing lip balm and makeup. I want to know what actually happens?

Depends on what state the offense is in, because each state has different ages of criminal responsibility.  For example, in NY 16-17 year olds are tried in adult courts.  However, if they are convicted they are "youthful offenders" and their criminal records are sealed upon turning 18. Shoplifting is a misdeedmeanor if its small dollar amount, and most likely its a slap on the wrist will result.  Fine and/or community service with plea bargain to less offense.

In America a slap on the hand from the Judge and community service.

In Iraq you get your hands cut off.

Well your parents will be called for sure. The local newspaper may print it in their police report column if they have one. And you may be ordered to do some community service. Along with a fine. That's if the store wants to press charges. Some don't if they feel sorry for you since your so young.
