What happens if you have no money for the toll bridge?

say you get to the barriers and you realise too late that you have no money...

what do they do to you?

I would suggest you don't be so tight, carry your wallet and cards and pay.I have heard in the uk of the owners fining the driver anything up to £50.00.

More and more toll bridges have an automatic system for paying.  If you don't use the automatic system, they catch your license plate number and send you a bill.

And a fine.

On California bridges it's $25 fine the first offense, and I believe it goes up with repeat offenses.

If you can prove that you have an automatic system for paying, they'll waive the fine and just let you pay the toll.  They'll also let you tie a license plate (or several license plates) to your account, so if any of those cars gets caught "not paying" it simply takes the toll from your money on the account.

happened to my daughter leaving Maryland.  They gave her an IOU, and envelope with the address on it and it and told here where to send the money.  They would not take a check or credit cards.

In some cases, they have a rule that if you send them payment within 24 hours of going through, you can just pay the amount you owe and no penalty.
