Question:

What happens if you inadvertantly sink the 9-ball in a game of '9-ball'?

Suppose the object ball is the 2. I hit the two, which hits some other balls. The cue ball stays on the table. But the nine goes down. Is the nine respotted? Or have I won the game?

I just read some rules that would sugges that an inadvertent sinking of the nine wins the game, as long as you have not fouled.

However, I have often played the way that the 9 is respotted if it is sunk accidently, foul or no foul.

However, it is quite clear to me that if you fail to hit your object ball, and then sink the nine, that the nine is repsotted.

So back to my question: if I sink the 9 inadvertantly, but do not foul, do I win? Or is the 9 respotted?

Thanks.

  1. You win by most rules....unless you are playing "call the shot" or "9 ball last ball in".....other wise "game over...rack them!".....only time that I think that you would spot it if it goes of the table on a legal shot or you make it after a "push-out"....good luck!

  2. By BCA (world-standardized) rules, any time the 9-ball drops on a legal shot, it's a win.  I've heard of some rules where the 9 needs to be called, but the vast majority of the time, it's played as a win.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  3. Accident or not... as long as you made a good hit on the object ball you were suppose to be shooting... you win.

It only gets spotted if the tournament rules say you have to call the 9-ball, and you didn't.

  4. In most cases, as long as you hit the object ball first, then sinking the nine-ball makes you a winner.  There might be other rules for different forms of this game, though.

  5. Yes you win

As long as good hit on legal ball ,9 down you win

    Game over

  6. yup you win as long as no foul is committed..
