Question:

What happens if you miss jury duty other than being fined?

I know it's no excuse and it isn't going to help but I completely forgot to call about my jury duty when it was scheduled. I filled out the questionnaire and everything but when it came time to see if I was scheduled or not I completely forgot. I live in New Jersey if it makes any difference. And I was number 625. Is there a bench warrant out for my arrest? My dad started yelling at me about it saying they are going to come after me and some nonsense like that so now I am really nervous. I tried calling but they were not open today and I just got the automated message. I looked on the website but the info I needed was no longer up. So basically I want to know if I could get arrested. And if I just had my license renewed would the DMV have known if I had a warrant? I am very confused if you hadn't noticed lol and unfortunately my family doesn't really know what to do or say to me. Any help would be appreciated!!!! =)

  1. Better you get in touch with them quickly and straighten it out.  You could spend a little time in a jail cell for contempt of court but it is much less likely to happen if you are proactive than if you make them come looking for you.

  2. Don't worry! Just call up the jury duty office on Tuesday and reschedule. In the past I have missed the date due to last minute emergency and couldn't notify them ahead of time and they start at 8am without me. When I call up the people are so nice. Don't worry about it.

  3. You will be jailed and could be fined heavily.

  4. Go down to the courthouse and find out. I wouldn't worry too much about it. They will probably put back in circulation for the next group.

  5. you will go to jail,

  6. what state are you in? sorry, nevermind-i wasn't paying attention. hang on a sec and i'll see if i can find it.

first, i would probably call them once their open and explain to them how you forgot. i'm sure it'll all be ok. i doubt you'll go to jail or anything, and IF you are fined it probably won't be too much, those are probably more for if you intentionally didn't show up, but i did find this:

7.Are there penalties for not reporting for jury service?

Jury service is both a privilege and an obligation of citizenship. While jury service can be inconvenient, your service is a necessary and valuable part of the legal system of this country. There are penalties for not reporting for jury service ranging from fines of up to $500.00, to a jail sentence or both.

i wouldn't worry too much. i hope it all works out for you!
