What happens if you tell a counselor your suicidal?

from what i know counselors by law have to report it if you say your suicidal, what kind of consequences are there if you do tell them? would it possibly have any effect on purchasing a gun?

  1. Your counselor will ask you if you have a plan. If you do not, then you are simply expressing a wish to die, and this is not reportable (it's recorded in the therapist's notes, which are private unless a judge wants to look at them).

    If your therapist thinks you are over the edge, he or she will get you committed, but this (in the States) only lasts for 5 days or so, after which you'll be put on medication for your depression until one is found that works.

    The last part of your question is alarming. Many people who commit suicide with a gun also kill their wives and children. Why don't you choose a quieter way, such as a drug overdose?

    Most people who are suicidal don't actually want to be dead, they just want a different life. You can change your life with help.
