What happens if you try to cancel a credit card that has a balance on it?

I think they bill you for the balance  and you have to pay it off before you can close it.

you can cancel the account, but you will still have to pay the remaining balance. You just can't use it for purchasing anymore.

All you do is close it to new transactions - meaning you can't use it to purchase anything else.  It does not do anything to the balance you owe.

You still have to pay the balance whether you cancel the card or just not use it.

Nothing at all but your still reasonable for paying back the debt.
