I just moved and my new apt. has side sliding windows instead of the regular up/down sliding windows. Do I have to buy a $500 special a/c or can I turn my regular a/c one quarter turn and jam it into my window so I can chill?.

  1. You must install an a/c in the horizontal position. The compressor has oil in it and if you turn the unit on its side the compressor would run without proper lubrication. And it won't run long

  2. The compressor oil can get in to the tubing, valves, or drier and then the unit is toast.

And what do you think will happen to the water it produces?

I looked at the ones made for sliders and don't understand why they cost so much more. But I noticed the standard ones are only 8" wider so you can still fit them in most windows except the very small ones. You just need a little wider plexiglass to cover the hole.

  3. You always install the air conditioner horizontal. Here is tips on installing in a window...

  4. No. The ac needs to be installed with the front of it horizontal. You will lose the freon it you turn it!
