I have a 2-stroke outboard engine (Mariner, 40H.P) and I used "multigrade oil 50w/20" instead of 2-stroke oil. Will this damage my boat? Can I mix 2-stroke oil in with it to eliminate adverse affects?

  1. yes it will ruin your engine.only use tcw3 oils in your engine unless you don;t like the engine and u want to kill it.buy the right oil and don;t fool around.

  2. Multigrade SAE oil dosen't mix well will gas that why there use in internal combustion engines> Non detergent oil can be use as a substaute> Yes add the correct  2 cyc oil and run till the fuel is use or replaced>It will smoke and the plugs may need to be replaced>

  3. Running regular motor oil instead of TCW-3 certified 2 cycle oil will most definitely damage your motor if ran with it for a significant period of time.  Regular motor oil is NOT designed to mix with gas, which is an essential purpose for 2 cycle oil.  If it can't mix with gas, the engine can't get lubrication, and eventually permenant damage occurs.

You have to get rid of any gas that has been contaminated with regular motor oil when you mixed it together.  If it is in the oil tank for the oil injection/oil pump, then you must have it drained and cleaned out.  This is not optional, this must be done immediately before using your outboard again.

In short, don't EVER do this again for any 2 cycle engine, unless you like paying lots of unneeded repair bills.
