Question:

What happens in California if you get your fake id taken?

I used my id at a grocery store and the manager went and checked it, came back and said it was fake and that I could either have it back and they'd call the police, or I could just leave. I decided to leave and they kept the id. Can I still get in trouble for this? What is the likelihood that the manager would hand it over to the police after I left?

  1. Typically, they toss them out.  If they give it to the police and they actually bother to investigate it, it could lead to a charge.

  2. Usually, the store will add your name to its list of people that have used fake IDs, especially to buy alcohol or cigarettes, and if it is a chain store (like Krogers, etc), then the list goes to all their stores.

If you try to use another fake ID in their store(s), you will not be given the option, the police will arrest you.

  3. who knows.what were you trying to buy by the way?

  4. What happens is that you can't use it anymore.  They wouldn't go to the trouble of turning it in to the police.  The police have more important things to do with their time.
