  1. Oil of clove and zinc oxide, mixed together and it becomes a paste.

  2. To start off the dentist will make an access point in the tooth and then determine the length of the tooth by placing file into the canal and taking a radiograph of the file and tooth.  After this he/she will begin to clean and shape the canal with different size files.  Don't worry you wont feel any of this, you'll be good and numb.  Before you leave the office they will give you an intracanal medicament.  This medicament is integral to the root canal treatment and is closely related to the success of the Tx.    The most likely temporary they will use is calcium hydroxide which is available in different forms, combinations and proprietary compounds.  The reason for the intracanal medicament of calcium hydroxide is b/c it is an antimicrobial.  This will help eliminate the great majority of harmful bacteria within the pulp that can lead to an infection and eventual failure of the root canal.  During the follow up appointment he will obturate the canal fill with gutta percha.  I hope this helps.
