What happens in councelling meetings? is it just you, the counceller, two chairs and a table where you talk about you and your feelings the whole time? every time?

What happens on your first meeting? And general meetings after? and does the counceller ask you lots of questions so you dont have to be talking the whole time trying to fill her in on whats been happening?

All answers appreciated, im 16 by the way.

  1. Some councillors use low easy chairs so you have to sit back and try to relax.

You will be asked questions about your Family,

your background, the relationships you have with those nearest to you .

Most will go easy for the first few visits, they expect Honesty and open mindedness. You may be tested at times on what it takes to trigger your temper, emotions

The things you enjoy, how you feel about the World in general.

The whole idea of a Councillor is that they are able to get a bigger picture of you in there getting to know you over a set time. They get to know what it is that makes you tick, how you perceive yourself and Life in General.

Once they are able to establish you as a person they can then best decide on how you can be Helped.

It all seems pretty daunting, but as long as you are honest and not afraid to show your emotions they can be very helpful.

Of course depending on what you are seeing a Councillor for, decifers any of the above!

Remember they are people just like any of us.

They are trained in what they are doing,so if you think at times they are harsh on you, this is all for a reason.

Good Luck Poppet.[ It's better than the Dentist.]

  2. A good counselor knows how and what to do for you. Mostly he will ask questions and want you to respond. As you affirm your feelings with an outward voice, it causes you to understand your feelings and techniques as to how you let others around you affect you. Once you understand how this works it begins to let you see if in fact you can change your own beliefs about things and maybe change what you need to change yourself. Questions should include different areas where you are having concerns and feelings. Sometimes you don't know what all these consist of until you hear yourself answer some things. There can be many reasons why you perceive things maybe differently than others. Not a bad thing unless it is something you need to think about and change.

Learning that all people are different and you just let them be different than you.  And that is OK . You are an individual yourself and there is no one on this earth like you. Learning to cope with your own negative feelings is what it's all about.

Get this personalized book , that has your own name throughout , and it will build your own sefl confidence and you begin to realize YOU are important too. It is full of positive affirmations using your name throughout.  A very neat and highly recommended book. You have to order it personally online.  I have included the website where you can get yourself one. I can't imagine being without mine. It's powerful !

Change your thought system and patterns and you will change the world around you...Only as you choose to receive help ,be it with a counsellor or by enforcing positive beliefs yourself, can you change whatever it is that you need help with. You can encourage yourself by reading this book even a little every day. Change your belief system and you can change into a positive confident person. It works ! It's a powerful way to see change happen !

  3. Should be held in a quite room with easy chairs, not like a clinic setting.  So to make you comfortable.

  4. It will be held in a normal room with a couple of chairs and possibly a table/desk. The councillor will ask you questions (what's happened, how you feel and so on) and write down things. They will usually try and make you feel as comfortable as possible and try and be understanding. They will explain things to you as well and help you through whatever it is

  5. Ring/email the place you are possibly going to go and ask them the very questions you asked here then you will know the answers and they will know you needed to ask the questions :) I have been going for 3 years. I have seen the same councellor for all that time because she works well with me and I trust and value her opinion and the manner in which she treats me feels kind and respectful, proffessional and it feels like she knows her stuff. I tried councelling before that but didnt like the previous 2 people so gave up then a few years later tried again and found my current therapist who is great. So even if you dont like the first one you meet for whatever reason keep trying to find one who you do feel comfortable with and you to will find that you are able to communicate comfortably and freely with them.

I understand your worries - I had them to, but I was brave and stuck it out. If you do to then you will find the experience is very enriching and rewarding to your life.

    Good Luck :)

  6. it sounds like you will be seeing a person centred counsellor. they will do the introduction, names etc. its all done in a very informal setting where you will feel comfortable. at the first meeting they will tell you they are bound by the bacp and that anything you tell them will be confidential other than. it infringes the data protection act, the drug trafficking act, the terrorism act, and wether you tell them you intend to harm yourself or others. if you do infringe these limits the counsellor will stop the session and tell you why. the counsellor will not give advice at all, they will do nearly all the listening allowing you to express yourself. they will not discuss your problems with anyone other than your gp and then only if they feel you need different help than they can give. Please do express yourself freely and say whatever you are thinking only that way can we help. counselling is fantastic if you are open to it and will help enormously. you will probably have six sessions, sometimes twelve. good luck.

  7. It's not the Spanish Inquisition! You will be made to feel as comfortable as possible. The experience should be enjoyable. Counsellors are trained in techniques to enable you to talk through your problems at your pace. It seems to me that you are unnecessarily anxious about the meeting. Don't be. Once you have had your first meeting you will wonder what you were worried about. Trust me, I'm  old!
