Question:

What happens now that I've bounced a check to my electric company?

I had to goto a store and make payment yesterday to get my lights turned back on. Now it looks like the check will bounce. What will happen next? I know I will get hit with overdraft fees but am curious how soon it might get sent back through. Looks like Tuesday is the earliest day I'll have the funds to pay it. It was an ACH payment. Any Ideas? Will they cut me back off this weekend? I'm just curious for any input that I can get. Thanks.

  1. Question: why would you want to play that game anyway? With utilities, if you're in a bind one month and give them  a small amount they won't go nuts and simply carry the "overflow" to the next bill. So why want to go for a rubber check  (and trouble with the bank) on top of that? Do the math and pay your bills.

  2. There is no float time for checks anymore.  If you made an ACH payment,  it will bounce back the next business day.  It's likely they will turn off your power before you get the funds on Tuesday.

You will probably have additional fees to pay the power company for the bounced check, plus reconnection fees AGAIN.  You would have been much better off to just sit in the dark till Tuesday when you actually had the funds to get your power back on.
