  1. Although It hasn't happened yet, I personally feel that It is not a bad thing at all.

Just like EU, I hope that we Asians have something like Asia Union in the future.

To form the Union, China and India should have stronger economic power.

  2. Ever seen anything that says Made in India ? I have'nt. India is one of the most polluted and over crowded countries in the world. They are FAR behind Japan. Except maybe for call centers.

BTW, those money making companies in China are Japanese owned.

  3. We usually say that if you ask a silly question, you get a silly answer.

But you asked a silly question and have gotten some very intelligent answers!

Have you ever even been to Japan? I have lived in both countries and the quality of life in Japan is far and above that in China, sorry!!!

  4. China and India have a LONG way to go before they're even in the same ballpark.

  5. USA just lose one of Its convenient followers in Asia.

It seems Japanese feel  very  inactive to their future such as a frog heated up very gradually but irreversibly in the water of stew pan.

  6. It's not as if economic growth in China and India is a bad thing for Japan. Japanese firms have been investing in China and India all along and those firms (and Japan) will prosper as long as China and India prosper. Like nitebear says, the new middle classes are a whole new market for Japanese high-end consumer goods. For whatever reasons anti-Japanese sentiment in China does not extend to Japanese brands. Makers of counterfeit goods in China often appropriate Japanese brand names for products that the real firm doesn't even manufacture. Hence there are "Sony" shoes and "Mitsubishi" sleeping bags, etc. If you take a firm like Sony, their policy is that their cutting edge products are always made in Japan (thus avoiding theft of intellectual property) and their run of the mill stuff is made in cheap labour countries-so Japan is always climbing the productivity curve even as other countries might have higher overall growth.  For the average Japanese person who lives in a tiny apartment, goes to work on a crowded train and then works long hours, having the strongest economy in Asia doesn't mean very much to begin with.

However there is no guarantee that things will always go smoothly for emerging markets-look at the Thai meltdown of 1997. It's kind of scary the way average Chinese workers are investing their savings in stocks with outrageous P/E ratios. One advantage the chaotic democracy of India has over Chinese authoritarianism is its inherent stability. When and if Chinese people find out that stocks can go down as well as up, there could be a lot of unrest.

  7. Probably not too bad.  Many larger Japanese companies have already spread out their manufacturing base to other countries to meet growing demand for their products.  Several have made mfg deals with companies in both countries to offset rising costs and distribution costs to the asian and other markets.  Further many have repositioned themselves to the higher end market and high quality thereby making them the standard to which other mfrs strive to reach.  in doing this they have made their products the ones desired by the up and coming middle and upper classes so there will always be a demand for Japanese made products from Japan at high pricing.  Like many German companies products quality, craftsmanship sell.

  8. What does it matter?  Good for China and India.  That doesn't mean that life gets worse in Japan or anything.  It just means that the rest of the world cleans up a bit, and that's what most Japanese like.

Of course there are a few losers out there that actually feel threatened, but those kinds of people exist in any country.  It's not like Japanese are Americans or something.  They're not going to have a hissy fit.
