What happens to a Canadian citizen if they import goods without paying Duty?

If a Canadian citizen buys goods in the US and brings them across the Canadian border under the shipper's authority without declaring the goods to Customs, what are the consequences? The citizen intends to re-sell the goods they purchased in the US.

  1. You got to jail for tax evasion -It's that simple  


  2. There's a lot of variables.  The penalties will be harshest if the goods are controlled like alcohol or tobacco.

    If you're audited by the CRA or Customs you'll have to provide copies of invoices.  You'll be fined the duty, a penalty, and if the situation is serious (large dollar amount or long period of time that this has happened) you and the seller may face jail time.
