I don't mean the hospital part of it, I mean once he recovers, is he allowed to go back on duty? Is he confined to a desk? Someone said they would have to visit the departmnet shrink. True?

(looking for a friend of mine)

  1. he either goes to the hospital and goes "wow i almost died" and gets alllll the free donuts he wants or he dies :( how saaaaad

  2. A medical exam would be done to make sure he is physically able to return to work. In the meantime, he could be assigned desk duties to avoid payment of workmen's comp.

I'm not aware of any departments that require a psychological exam, but I'm sure some do.  The officer would probably be encouraged to go, regardless of the requirement.

  3. My husband was shot in the line of duty. He was required to visit with the department psychologist before they would clear him for full duty. His partner, who was also shot did not pass the psychologist's exam and was given a duty disability which meant he was considered disabled. My husband returned to work. (oh ...his partner was hit in the vest, my husband was shot in the stomach were the vest didn't cover. It went in the front and out the back.)

As far as I've been told, most department have some sort of requirement that an officer be evaluated after a shooting. It is dangerous, not only for the officer but other officers as well, to have someone who is too scared to be on the streets out there protecting and serving.
