What happens to a provisional driver with passengers?

I just got my california drivers license (provisional)

legally I can't have passengers, but I am wondering what that really means. If I get in a crash (not at fault) will I be insured? If I get the ticket for passengers, how will that affect my insurance payment?

I just want to give my co-worker a ride home, or go mountainbiking with a friend or something.

The fine is relatively small (less than $100).  

You may also get community service hours.

Regarding insurance, it's up to the company.  Check the contract to see if you would be covered or not.  They would probably also raise your premiums if you get caught.
