Do I get money back or can I change the date to go back?

if you do not have a refundable ticket, it will cost you about $50 to change, but you can apply the return ticket value toward a future trip.  yes, even for non-refundable tickets.

If it is a non-refundable type excursion fare, you can change the return date for a fee, usually 100-150 dollars, for the same itinerary.  In other words, you can't change a San Francisco-New York ticket to fly Los Angeles-Miami routing.  You won't get a refund though if you choose not to use it at all.

It depends on the conditions of the purchase. I buy cheap non-refundable tickets. I cannot change the date nor get a refund.

If you have a ticket that is refundable and you want your money, you need to contact the airlines. If the ticket expires, you will not be able to get your money back nor will you be able to use it.
