  1. There are several exampl.es

    - Fish & PCB levels such as lead, mercury and other toxins, basically the idea is that smaller organisms retain these toxins then when eaten by larger more complex organisms they inturn retain these toxins.  Caused by industrial pollutants, mining, etc...  

    - I would say that oil is not as big of a problem as other pollutants.  Mainly because oil and water do not mix.  Put a goldfish in a bowl and pour in oil, the oil floats and the fish lives, but the addition of say laundry detergent, pesticides or other and the fish will die.

    - Other major factors are like complex systems where pollutants increase bacteria growth making the water more dirty, less oxygen filled and generally less habital for fish and other aquatic life.
