What happens to clothes when you put them in a clothes bank at a recycling facility?

I have a few bags of clothes to dispose of, I would give them to charity but not all of them are re-usable, but I don't want the ones that are to be wasted.

What happens if I dump them in a clothes bank, does someone go through and sort them, does the fabric get recycled or do they just get binned?

  1. they get recycled and reused

  2. It depends on what bins you are talking about.  Goodwill and most church donations are sorted and sold in their shops at a very reasonable price.  This activity creates jobs for the people who do the sorting and who work in the stores.  Otherwise they might not have a job.

If you are talking about the free standing bins that look like a large mailbox and (in my area) are red, then that is a company that does basically the same thing but more of the clothing is sent overseas for sale.   Again this creates jobs for people here and it goes a long way in getting nice clothes to some countries (mostly in Africa) to people who could not otherwise afford them.  As someone who has lived in Africa, I know about this first hand.  I even bought a couple of things while I was there.  Although these companies are for-profit, they do more good than any profit they are making by putting smiles on the faces of the people who buy the clothes.

In both cases, clothes that are not usable are sometimes scanned for buttons and zippers that can be reused.

Please use all these different places for contributions, as they go different places and they all do good.

  3. Some of them are sold in thrift shops, some are donated to the needy, and others are bundled up and sold in lots to third world countries.

  4. Blue jeans and some other fabrics end up as insulation for homes.
