What happens to freshwater algae when put into the ocean? Why?

  1. They have all the water sucked out of them and shrink.  The ocean is high salt, making it hypertonic to the freshwater cells.  To equilibration concentration, water has to move OUT of the algae. (because this increases the concentration inside them)
