  1. some hibernate and some simply burrow deep into the earth

  2. Some hibernate. One cricket even has a type of antifreeze in its blood to keep from freezing solid.

Most adults die, though, and their eggs survive through the winter and hatch in spring.

  3. They do just about everything you can think of.  Some species of wasps all die off except the queen who burrows deep and waits for spring.  Some species of insects that live in trees and underground stay active all winter.  Some insects lay eggs that wait for spring to develop. Some caterpillars pupate in the fall and the butterfly emerges in the spring.

The same family of insects may have more than one method for overwintering based on which continent they are found. Its a fascinating world studying insects.
