What happens to matter when it's burnt?

For example, take a piece of wood and burn it until it's gone... It can't really be gone. Where does the matter that the wood was originally made of go?

  1. Wood is mostly made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. There are some other elements as well. When something burns, it's atoms combine with the oxygen in the air. Carbon becomes carbon dioxide, hydrogen becomes water, and oxygen atoms become oxygen molecules. These are all gases, and mix with the air, so the wood seems to disappear.


  2. It is coverted to other substances, some gases ad solids.

  3. Burning is a chemical process.Matter is not destroyed,only it changes the form.
