What happens to my original car registration when I put a private plate on my car? Do I still own it?

What happens when I sell my current car? I can move my private plate to the new car but what registration number does the car being sold get, its original one or is it allocated a random new one or what? Does it cost anything? Links to appropriate web pages would be good. Thanks!

  1. When you put a private plate on your car the original belongs to the DVLA, if someone can use that plate they will sell it. Then when you change your car if possible they will normally issue the original plate. I have transferred private plates to 3 cars and in the process of doing it a 4th time. With all 3 cars we have received the original plate back. It normally costs £80 to transfer a plate to another vehicle, or if you put it on hold which covers you for 12 months it will cost £105, this includes the transfer fee.

  2. the car goes back to its registration plate when you remove your private plate. You pay DVLA £80 for the paper work for the transfer of your number to your next car and the reinstatement of your old cars number.Go to elite registrations site for a good explanation of how it all works?Hope this helps

  3. it may go back on it's original plate, but there's no guarantee, and no you don't still own it.

the car will go back on the same age identifier if it's the original or not.

  4. The car will revert to its original number if it still available* (the original number is owned by DVLA when you initially put your cherished plate on your car).

    * It is now usual for the original number to be held by DVLA for re-use when you move your cherished plate.  If the number is not available, perhaps someone has requested it as a cherished plate in the interim period, your car will be issued with an 'age related' plate i.e. the same registration period '05' or whatever, but otherwise the other digits will be 'new'.

The only cost to you is the £80 transfer fee for your registration.

  5. I think they get the original, but to be sure contact DVLA:

  6. you never owned the original plate in the first place. it belongs to the sec of state. you only have a private plate if you pay a retention fee for it , and then a transfer fee for each move. in this case the car being sold will revert to its original plate.

  7. No it is binned, unless you have it put on a Retention Certificate, see  http://www.newreg.co.uk/
