What happens to olympic medals when the olympian dies?

For the most part, I'm sure it gets passed to a relative. But, like the oscars, if the medal was not passed to a relative does the olympic association get it back? Can it be sold or auctioned?

  1. it is an award/reward so the olympian can leave it in a will to family or friends even charitable trusts. some may choose to be buried with it.if no will is made then the family would have to choose what to do with it.-blurey
