What happens to special needs people after high school? O_o?

Hi,

I'm curious what happens to special needs people after High School? Where do they end up after High School? I mean they dont have much going for them. plz help

  1. The Special Needs children that make it all the way through High school are very special people. My brother has downs syndrome he is in 1st grade and he is almost ten. After high School some special needs children are institutionalized which in my opinion can be good and bad. But, some of the Parents of these children, god bless them, take care of them til they themselves die and they pass him/her on to a relative. Sometimes parents are not capable of handling the actual detail of their child's needs either mentally or emotionally and they decide that they can not do it alone they go for help thisalso in my opinion can be a really good thing for the child and the parent. Either plan the child's parent chooses is their choice though

Those of whom you speak probably don't make it through high school because the parents have lovingly kept them at home or found a care center for them if their needs cannot be met at home.  Those special needs people who do get past high school are often able to function in some capacity in the working world.  One goal in many high school programs is to teach life skills for independent living.  There are too many success stories just in my small community to list here.  Why don't you volunteer in a program for adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities and find out for yourself.

  4. I work in a program with severely handicapped individuals to age 22. Individuals move from a handicapped school in which they learn vocational skills so they can transition from the school to other programs in which they can do minimal work and recreational tasks. Some individuals live in group homes and they go out to their jobs and then come home. Some individuals are institutionalized if there behaviors cant be controlled. Some even end up in jail. Some individuals live in their homes and dont go out for a job. Its individual to the student.

  5. If they receive what they should, most will lead productive lives. The process begins with a individual transision plan fron school into the community. As this plan is developed over their last few years in school, they begin to access adult services that are appropriate for their specific needs.  Upon graduation they access these services and the transition starts. The bigest problem thet I have seen in the past is poor planing as far as transition is concerned.
