  1. During telophase, the sister chromatids split apart, doubling the number of chromosomes in the cell.

    However, the cell quickly splits in half along the metaphase plate (cytokinesis), forming two new cells, so each daughter cell has as many chromosomes as the mother cell.

    The chromosomes replicate later in the cell cycle during S phase (between the two G phases), making two sister chromatids attached together, so that the cells can split again.


  2. At the end of mitosis the chromosomes recoil (from chromatid structure) and assume linear thread like appearance or become interwoven into chromatin net.
