I'm thinking "OIL"is important to earth,Earth might be a biological machine, machines need oil.Or its just there too clog up the tunnels, that the aliens have dug.I'm going with #2.Just a strange thought. But what is strange? Are we not flying around the sun rite now in a big blue globe.Whats your answer?

  1. yes. and the ground is more likely to be weaker. that's my hypothesis.

  2. LOL, anything is possible, but its not probable, but in australia the old mines are now collapsing and homes and road are falling into pits, so maybe not so bizzarre after all! :)

  3. You misunderstand how hydrocarbons (oil and gas) form. Put very simply, you need three layers of rock

    - An impermeable seal at the top, such as gypsum or ahydrite

    - A porous reservoir rock in which to hold the hydrocarbons

    - A source rock, such as a shale, rich in organic material.

Ideally, the source rock is heated until the organic material reaches the oil window (a pressure / temperature niche) and migrates upwards (due to positive bouyancy) into the reservoir rock. The seal rock prevents it migrating further up.

The important thing to not is that the oil and gas are held WITHIN the rock itself, in tiny gaps called pore spaces. If you don't understand what I mean, think of a piece of pumice stone. The holes are called vesicles, a special type of pore. In a reservoir rock, those pores are more likely to be much smaller, and interconnected.

So you see, there isn't just a large empty cavern holding oil that becomes a huge cave when it is pumped. The pore spaces become empty, and they can collapse inwards, causing subsidence, but this isn't certain by any means.

The Earth isn't really a biological machine, it influences us and we influence it (for example, the rise of atmospheric oxygen 2 billion years ago) but if you read Richard Dawkin's book the Selfish Gene, you'll see that all life is competitive, there is no co-operation between life to maintain Earth as habitable. There is a theory, called Gaia theory that maintains that Earth is regulated by life, which is true to an extent, but it asserts that all life works together for mutual gain, which really isn't true.

As for aliens...I'm not sure where to start. No evidence, and your idea relies on the fact that oil is found in tunnels, which it certainly isn't.

Yes, we are orbiting (not flying) around the Sun, which we've been doing (although not completely statically) so since Earth accreted 4.55 billion years ago. What is your point?

  4. They usually pump mud back into them!
