  1. sysmic activity.  depending on the  size of movement, richter scales, tectonic plates you can have a biggie or a smoothie.

  2. tsunamis...

  3. It can cause tsunamis.  An undersea earthquake is what caused the disastrous tsunamis in 2004.

"The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea (subduction) earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 225,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were hardest hit.

With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches)[3] and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The disaster is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, and is also known as the Asian Tsunami and the Boxing Day Tsunami."

  4. creates large waves...

  5. Earthquakes causes large waves then the waves turned into tsumani (Tidal Waves)!

  6. It depends upon the magnitude ,type of movement of tectonic plate,& the place where the energy is released. All these factors decides the creation of Tsunami.Otherwise it will just splash at shore as if you are shaking a vessel with a water in it.

  7. If you mean out in the open ocean on a boat, what would you notice if there was a big earthquake under you...

the answer is nothing. You would not even realize there was an earthquake.

Sometimes earthquakes create tsunamis, but if you were out in the open ocean you wouldn't notice these. Usually, the water just sort of absorbs the seismic waves without any real effect on the surface of the ocean.

  8. Most tsunami are caused by earthquakes.Earthquake-generated tsunami result from rapid displacement of the ocean floor.

Small and shallow earthquakes typical of seafloor spreading ridges do not generate tsunami. Transform faults do not generate tsunami because there is no vertical motion during earthquakes at those boundaries. Earthquakes at convergent boundaries where an oceanic plate subducts into the mantle are capable of generating tsunami because these earthquakes can displace the sea floor. The most dangerous earthquakes at these plate boundaries for generation of tsunami are large and shallow earthquakes that are likely to displace the ocean floor

Common ocean waves are a kind of surface waves called Rayleigh waves that are confined to the surface layer of the sea and tend to have wavelengths on the order of tens of meters and periods of tens of seconds. Tsunami waves can attain wavelengths over hundreds of kilometers and oscillatory periods of several minutes. The energy associated with the tsunami waves can propagate across the ocean at velocity several hundreds kilometers per hour.

  9. It causes a tsunami, like in the Indian ocean a few years ago when lots of people were killed.
