What happens to the vaccum created due to Crude oil being pumped out?

Crude is being pumped out like there is infinite resources. What happens to the empty spaces created?

  1. Sometimes the rocks compress, which can cause the ground to subside.  These days it is common to pump water into the ground to force the oil up--that is what is done in most of the fields in Saudi Arabia.  This water fills in the voids left by the oil. Eventually as these fields get old the "water cut" (how much water comes along with the oil that gets pumped out) becomes so large that it is no longer profitable to keep pumping.  That is why many fields can be abandoned even when the "reserves" say there is lots of oil left.
