  1. Your learning disability does not change because you drop out. Your IEP remains in force should you return with in one year or can be reactivated if you return later than in one year.

An IEP does not force you to go to school, but your age does. You must be 16 to drop out.

Of course as a teacher I am going to ask you not to drop out. No matter how bad school is, being jobless or poor all your life is worse. There isn't much out there for people without at least a high school diploma.

If you remain in school, the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation will come to your last IEP meeting and give you some options for training and tools. This would be a much better option for you because these days, the trades pay a lot more than some jobs that require a college degree.

The other thing you might do is get with a counselor or case manager to see what options you have besides staying on campus all day. Many students do work experience and get credit for it. There also may be some more creative things that can help you like doing some classes online.

Try to get your parent's involved in this if you can. You may need a new IEP that serves you better. Ask them to call for a new IEP if you think this is the case and then discuss your needs.

Try everything before you drop out. Your life depends on it!

  2. It goes in a file with a whole bunch of other personal information and the files can not be destroyed for a long time (10 years?) unless you give specific written permission.
