What happens to your vocal cords when you lose your voice?

I went to a roller coaster park two days ago and needless to say, I screamed quite a bit! I wonder what's going on in my throat right now!

And more importantly, what can I do to expedite the healing process so my voice can return?

  1. What's going on in your throat? Your vocal cords are swollen from all that screaming, which is considered to be "voice abuse".

Recovery depends on how swollen the cords are, but for only one day of voice abuse, it's usually pretty quick; a week or two.

During the recovery phase, you must strictly avoid the following behaviors (they all cause the vocal cords to slam together and make the swelling worse):

NO throat-clearing (instead, drink cool, not cold or hot beverages). I know you feel like something's in there that needs to be cleared, but it's just because the cords are swollen.

NO coughing, laughing, yelling, humming, or singing.

NO loud whispering, either. It, too, will make those cords bang together.
