Question:

What happens when ADR registation is revoked of viable company?

I owned shares of NEC corporation which was trading under the ADR ticker NIPNY. The registration was revoked but the company is still running ok. I can no longer trade the shares and my broker tells me that I no longer own any shares even though it appears as a number ticker in my list of stock positions. I would expect if the company is viable and the stock can no longer be traded, that they should cash you out. I received a dividend and paid a small tax and processing fee last month but did not receive any cash for my shares. Is my recourse only a tax writeoff? This does not seem right if the ADR was backed by real shares which are currently worth about $5 each.

  1. According to the Bank of New York site it is now traded on OTC (Pink Sheets)  market under the symbol NIPNY or NIPNF.  There appears to be some confusion over the symbol.  Bank of New York says the symbol remains the same, but the Pink Sheets says the symbol is NIPNF.
